The Uniform Numbers of Natural Stones of P.R.China

The national criterion of "The Uniform Numbers of Natural Stones " was established in March, 1998 on the examination conference presided over by the Production Coordination Department of the State Administration of Building Materials Industry in Quanzhou,Fujian Province,China.
Natural stones (granite and marble) are a kind of high-grade decoration material. Due to the reform and open policy of our country, and with the rapid development of stone industry, hundreds of varieties have been developed from previous few. Now several hundreds of stone processing lines have replaced the workshop style production. In the past stone products were mostly used by domestic customers, but now more and more are exported to international market and become a big share of foreign currency income in the building materials field.
In 1970's, some stone varieties were numbered by Foreign Trade Bureau for export purpose. For example,Beijing "M101", Shandong"M311","G386",Fujian "G635", "G603",Guangdong "G439" etc. The numbering satisfied the need of international trade by then, but not upto standard according to the state laws and regulations.
With the fast development of stone industry, more and more stone varieties have been produced. 
Some stone enterprises (or companies) name their products with the interests of their owns, which causes confusion in both domestic and international market, such as variety with several names or numbers, or different varieties been given the same number. In order to facilitate both domestic and international trade of the stone products, and to benefit to the automatic management of information and share of data, it is very imperative to draw up the uniform numbers.
ⅠThe principle and the requirement of drawing up the uniform numbers of stones

1. According to the GB/ T2260-91("the Administrative Area numbers of the People's Republic of China"), four digits numbers in stead of three have been adopted to draw up the numbers of stone. 
For example, Beijing "M101" is changed to "M1101", Shandong "G386" is changed to "G3786" etc.
2. All stone products included in "the Uniform Numbers of Natural Stones" are not prefixed with "China" before the numbers.
3. The quarries which possess good variety of products whose physical and mechanic performances are up to the national criterion, with a potential reserve, the rough blocks bigger than 1 cub no less than 500 cub annual exploiting capability can be included in the Criterion.
4. Prefix "M" to the numbers of marble and "G" to granite, "S" to slate, E.g. "M1101", "G3786", "S1115".
5. It is not permitted for one province, autonomous region or municipality directly under the Central Government to include products from other provinces, autonomous regions or municipality into their own number series.
6. Each province, autonomous region and municipality may number the local products, which have not been adopted by this criterion and wait for nextrevision.
ⅡThe naming of stone varieties.
1. Marble: The naming principle of marble is done as article 3.3.1 of JC/T202-92(96) (Natural Marble Blocks Criterion), the name is made up of place of production, characteri stics of color and veins etc.
2. Granite: The naming of granite is done as article 3.3.1 of JC/T204-92 (96) (Natural Granite Block Criterion), the name is made up of place of production, characteristics of colour and patterns, quarry number etc.
3. Slate: the naming method of slate refers to that of granite and marble.
Ⅲ the principle of numbering
The uniform numbers of natural stone is made up of one English alphabet and a four digital number.E.g., "G3768", "M3711" and "S1115' etc.
a. The English alphabet is just the capitalized initial of granite, marble and slate.
b. About the four digital numbers: The first two digits is the code of different provinces, autonomous regions or municipalities fixed by GB/T2260, E.g. Beijing is "11" ,Shandong is "37" and Fujian is "35". While the last two digits is the serial number of different stone varieties.
